Away early, following the valley north, as did Lewis and Clark. This is where they managed to get horses for the very difficult crossing of the Bitterroot Range to come. Then headed up Lola Pass, and over that range. The road now follows the river gorge, but that was too difficult then for horses, so they had to follow an old Indian trail high over the tops of the ridges. It was a long, tiring drive, constantly around bends, just trying to stay between the yellow lines in the middle of the road and the white line along the shoulder.... And trying to imagine how it would have been for them, being pushed by the deadline of the coming winter. They were up there exactly the same time of year, but in 1805.....
Finally down into Kooskia, Idaho. A little logging town, with the unattended airstrip right in the middle of town. Quickly set up and took off. Climbed up out of the narrow river valley to find that there are hay fields up on the ridges, so plenty of places to go if the engine quit. An excellent flight, then down through the flocks of geese that seem to think it's their airspace......
The cool weather has gone, and it's still high 90's F (36C) even after dark.....
